Why take it

## What the course does for you.

- You can explain each change between ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 14001:2026, including the two new clauses, and name the clause it sits in.
- You can interpret the new concepts, requirements and recommendations of the 2026 text, such as the broader environmental conditions in Clause 4 and the reinforced life cycle perspective.
- You can plan the changes an existing environmental management system needs to conform to ISO 14001:2026 before your certification body assesses it.
- If you passed a 2015-edition PECB ISO 14001 exam but have not applied for the credential, this is the exam PECB will require after 15 April 2027.
- If you already hold a PECB ISO 14001 credential, PECB encourages you to take this course and exam and report them as CPD.

The new edition

## ISO 14001:2026 is published.

ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026, the date both PECB and UKAS give. It replaces ISO 14001:2015 including Amendment 1:2024.

Global ACI calls the overall changes minimal and puts the number of accredited ISO 14001 certificates at approximately 700,000. The detail matters more than that headline suggests: UKAS rates more clauses significant than in the ISO 9001 revision, mostly in Clauses 4, 6 and 8, and the new-certificate cut-off comes five months earlier than ISO 9001’s.

The standard now follows ISO’s Harmonized Structure (ISO TMB resolution 16/2025), with terms and definitions aligned to it and new phrasing for documented information. Annex A guidance now clarifies context, risks and opportunities and how they link to other clauses, the life cycle perspective, and alignment with strategy, business processes and an integrated management system.

Old against new

## ISO 14001:2015 compared with ISO 14001:2026.

The rating column is UKAS’s own, from its gap analysis summary (Appendix A, issue 1, 7 May 2026). Key changes follow Global ACI’s transition requirements. The 2015 column includes Amendment 1:2024.

| Clause or area | ISO 14001:2015 with Amendment 1:2024 | ISO 14001:2026 | UKAS rating |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Structure and terms | Annex SL high-level structure | Harmonized Structure; terms and definitions aligned to it; new phrasing for documented information | Not rated |
| 4.1 Context | Internal and external issues, including environmental conditions; climate change added by Amendment 1:2024 | Broader environmental conditions made explicit: PECB names climate change, biodiversity loss and resource scarcity | Significant |
| 4.2 Interested parties | Needs and expectations; Amendment 1:2024 note on climate | Revised | Significant |
| 4.3 Scope | Scope of the environmental management system | Revised | Significant |
| 5.2 Environmental policy | Existing requirement | Minor change | Minor |
| 5.3 Roles | “Organizational roles, responsibilities and authorities” | Retitled “Roles, responsibilities and authorities” | No change |
| 6.1.1 General | Holds the risks and opportunities requirements | Revised | Significant |
| 6.1.2 Environmental aspects | Life cycle perspective | A reinforced life cycle perspective in identifying environmental aspects | Significant |
| 6.1.3 Compliance obligations | Existing requirement | Minor change | Minor |
| 6.1.4 Risks and opportunities | Sat inside 6.1.1 General | New stand-alone clause | Significant |
| Planning action | 6.1.4 | Renumbered 6.1.5 | Minor |
| 6.3 Planning of changes | Not in the 2015 edition | New clause | Significant |
| 7.2 Competence and 7.4.1 Communication | Existing requirements | Minor changes | Minor |
| 8.1 Operational planning and control | Includes control of outsourced processes and life cycle considerations | Revised | Significant |
| 8.2 Emergency preparedness and response | Existing requirement | Minor change | Minor |
| 9.1.1, 9.1.2 and 9.2.2 | Existing requirements | Minor changes | Minor |
| 9.3 Management review | One clause with no subclauses | Split into 9.3.1 General, 9.3.2 Inputs and 9.3.3 Outputs | Minor |
| Clause 10 Improvement | 10.1 General, 10.2, 10.3 Continual improvement | 10.1 Continual improvement and 10.2; 10.3 removed | Significant (10.1 and 10.3) |

Where the work is

## Two new clauses and five big revisions.

### 6.1.4 Risks and opportunities

Risks and opportunities used to sit inside 6.1.1. They now have a stand-alone clause, and the old 6.1.4 on planning action becomes 6.1.5. PECB describes this as “the revised planning logic for risks and opportunities”.

### 6.3 Planning of changes

The 2015 edition had no clause on planning changes. PECB calls the new 6.3 “the newly formalized approach to managing change”: a planned change to the environmental management system now has to be thought through before it is made.

### Context, interested parties and scope (4.1 to 4.3)

All three are rated significant. PECB points to an “increased focus on broader environmental conditions, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource scarcity, when analyzing the organizational context”.

### Environmental aspects and operational control (6.1.2 and 8.1)

PECB highlights “the reinforced life cycle perspective in identifying environmental aspects”, and UKAS rates the revision to 8.1, which already covered outsourced processes and life cycle considerations, significant.

### Improvement (Clause 10)

Continual improvement moves from 10.3 to 10.1, and UKAS rates the change significant, unlike the equivalent move in ISO 9001:2026.

Transition timetable

## ISO 14001:2026 transition deadlines.

Certified organisations have until 30 April 2029. The dates come from Global ACI’s mandatory transition requirements (TECH-3-TR, issued 4 September 2026), UKAS’s technical bulletin for UK certification bodies and PECB’s own rule for exam candidates.

| Milestone | Date | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| ISO 14001:2026 published | 15 April 2026 | PECB, UKAS |
| UKAS grants its first tranche of certification bodies | 30 October 2026 | UKAS |
| Accreditation bodies ready to assess certification bodies | By 31 October 2026 | Global ACI |
| Certification bodies submit their transition declaration | By 31 January 2027 | Global ACI |
| Candidates who passed a 2015-edition PECB ISO 14001 exam apply for certification | By 15 April 2027 | PECB |
| Accreditation bodies complete their transition decisions; UKAS’s deadline for UK certification bodies | By 30 April 2027 | Global ACI, UKAS |
| New and initial certifications to ISO 14001:2026 only | From 31 October 2027 | Global ACI |
| Every certified organisation transitioned | By 30 April 2029 | Global ACI, UKAS |

The new-certificate cut-off for ISO 14001 (31 October 2027) comes five months before ISO 9001’s (31 March 2028); see [ISO 9001:2026 Transition](https://aegentra.co.uk/academy/iso-9001-2026-transition). Some providers quote 15 April 2029 or the end of May 2029 as the end date; Global ACI and UKAS both give 30 April 2029. To check that a certificate is UKAS-accredited, see [how to check an ISO certificate claim](https://aegentra.co.uk/knowledge/checking-certification).

If you are already certified

## Already hold a PECB ISO 14001 credential?

PECB says the 2026 edition does not affect it:

> “The new updates do not have an impact on your existing certification against ISO 14001 standard. If you have a valid ISO 14001 Implementer, Lead Implementer, Senior Lead Implementer or an ISO 14001 Auditor, Lead Auditor, or Senior Lead Auditor, you just need to maintain these certifications active by submitting CPDs and AMFs.”

PECB encourages certified individuals to take the transition course and exam to update their knowledge, and to report them as continuing professional development. ISO 14001 Foundation and the Provisional Implementer and Provisional Auditor credentials are lifetime certificates with no maintenance, and PECB says the new edition does not affect them either.

### Passed an exam but not yet applied?

PECB’s rule for candidates who passed an ISO 14001 exam based on the 2015 edition:

> “Candidates who have passed the ISO 14001 exams based on the ISO 14001:2015 version of the standard, can apply for certification until April 15, 2027, at the latest (1 year after the publication of the standard). After this date, candidates who would like to apply for the certification will have to take the ISO 14001:2026 Transition exam, and the regular fee applies.”

In short: apply by 15 April 2027, or take this exam first.

The exam and credential

## Know what you are preparing for.

Credential eligibility and the certification decision are assessed by PECB. Training does not certify your organisation.

- **Format:** Multiple-choice, closed book

- **Duration:** 1 hour

- **Questions:** 40 multiple-choice questions

- **Pass mark:** Not published by PECB for this exam

- **Languages:** English or French

- **Delivery:** Online or on paper

Domain 1 tests the differences between the main clauses of ISO 14001:2026 and ISO 14001:2015. Domain 2 tests understanding, planning and implementing the ISO 14001:2026 changes. Online multiple-choice results are shown straight away; after an unsuccessful attempt PECB requires at least 15 days before the first retake. Ask the Academy to confirm the pass mark with PECB before you sit the exam.

### The credential

Passing leads to the PECB Certified ISO 14001:2026 Transition credential. PECB requires no professional experience and no EMS project experience for it; you sign the PECB Code of Ethics. The credential needs no maintenance.

PECB says the 2026 edition does not affect existing ISO 14001 credentials, which you keep active with CPD and the annual maintenance fee as before; see the section on existing credentials above.

**Before you enrol: prerequisites**

None. PECB states there are no prerequisites for this course. Working knowledge of ISO 14001:2015 makes the clause-by-clause comparison easier to follow.

From knowledge to a working decision

## A certified EMS adds the new clauses

Take a fictional manufacturer certified to ISO 14001:2015. Draft how it would meet the new 6.1.4 and 6.3: where risks and opportunities are now recorded, and how a planned change to a production process is assessed before it goes ahead.

Record a decision, owner, evidence requirement and review trigger for each. Explain your assumptions and what remains outside the exercise.

Original optional study prompt, not an official PECB exam question, an additional included lab or evidence of professional experience. Use fictional information.

### Before you book the exam.

**Check your exact exam**

Confirm the course, exam language, duration and permitted materials against PECB’s current exam listing and rules. Similar titles from different training providers can lead to different qualifications. [PECB exam listing](https://help.pecb.com/list-of-pecb-exams/)

**Prepare your exam environment**

Before booking, check the latest online-exam manual for identification, equipment, connectivity and room requirements. Ask PECB about reasonable accommodations early if you need them. [PECB online-exam manual](https://pecb.com/en/online-exam-manual)

**Plan the credential application**

Passing the exam and being awarded a particular credential are separate steps. Check the applicable experience, references and application requirements; do not assume a Lead title is awarded automatically. [PECB certification requirements](https://pecb.com/en/certification-rules-and-policies)

For permitted materials, exam conduct and accommodation requests, read [PECB’s exam rules](https://pecb.com/en/exam-rules-and-policies). Requirements can change; check the current rules for your exact exam.

Your questions

## Before you choose.

**When was ISO 14001:2026 published?**

On 15 April 2026. It replaces ISO 14001:2015 including Amendment 1:2024.

**What are the main changes in ISO 14001:2026?**

Two new clauses, 6.1.4 Risks and opportunities and 6.3 Planning of changes, plus revisions UKAS rates significant in 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 6.1.1, 6.1.2, 8.1 and Clause 10. PECB highlights the broader environmental conditions in Clause 4 (climate change, biodiversity loss and resource scarcity) and the reinforced life cycle perspective in identifying environmental aspects.

**What is the ISO 14001:2026 transition deadline?**

Certified organisations must transition by 30 April 2029. Global ACI sets the date in its mandatory transition requirements, and UKAS gives UK certification bodies until the same date to transition their certified customers.

**When do certification bodies stop issuing ISO 14001:2015 certificates?**

From 31 October 2027, new and initial certifications are to ISO 14001:2026 only, under Global ACI’s transition requirements. That is five months earlier than the equivalent ISO 9001 date.

**Does ISO 14001:2026 affect my existing PECB ISO 14001 Lead Auditor or Lead Implementer certificate?**

No. PECB says the new edition does not affect existing ISO 14001 credentials; you keep them active by submitting CPD and paying the annual maintenance fee. PECB encourages certified individuals to take the transition course and exam and report them as CPD.

**I passed a PECB ISO 14001 exam based on the 2015 edition. Can I still apply for certification?**

Yes, until 15 April 2027. After that date PECB requires the ISO 14001:2026 Transition exam first, and the regular fee applies.

**What is the ISO 14001:2026 Transition exam format?**

One hour, 40 multiple-choice questions, closed book, online or on paper, in English or French. PECB has not published the pass mark for this exam. The bundle includes one free retake, taken at least 15 days after an unsuccessful attempt and within 12 months of purchase.

**Are there prerequisites for the ISO 14001:2026 Transition course?**

No. PECB states there are no prerequisites, and the credential needs no professional or EMS project experience. Knowing ISO 14001:2015 helps, because the course compares the two editions.
