Why take it

## What the course does for you.

- A structured method for the whole AI risk cycle: setting context and governance, then identifying, analysing, evaluating, treating, monitoring and reporting AI risks.
- Practice on real cases: you analyse AI risk scenarios drawn from the MIT AI Risk Repository.
- Working knowledge of the NIST AI RMF, a voluntary US framework, and the EU AI Act, which reaches UK organisations that place AI systems on the EU market.
- Specific risks covered by name: bias, security vulnerabilities, transparency issues and ethical concerns, with mitigation strategies and incident response.
- A credential that grows with you: PECB awards the tier your experience supports, from Provisional Manager to Senior Lead.

What it is built on

## Three frameworks, one risk process.

PECB says the course is “based on leading frameworks such as the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, the EU AI Act, and insights from the MIT AI Risk Repository”.

### NIST AI Risk Management Framework

A voluntary framework published by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology for managing the risks of AI systems. The course uses it as a working method.

### EU AI Act

The EU regulation that sets risk-based obligations for AI systems. It matters to UK organisations that place AI systems on the EU market.

### MIT AI Risk Repository

A public collection of documented AI risks maintained at MIT. On the course you analyse real-world AI risk scenarios taken from it.

### Standards the exam also covers

The candidate handbook’s first domain expects knowledge of “key international standards and frameworks such as ISO/IEC 42001, ISO/IEC 22989, ISO/IEC 23894, and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework”. ISO/IEC 23894:2023 gives guidance on AI risk management; it is not a requirements standard an organisation certifies against. The course covers it, but is not based on it.

### Regulation across regions, the UK included

The same domain covers AI regulation across major regions, including the EU AI Act, GDPR, UK and US AI laws, sector-specific regulations and emerging frameworks in other regions. Check the official materials for how far each jurisdiction is covered.

Is this your next step?

## Who this course suits best.

The exam and credential

## Know what you are preparing for.

Credential eligibility and the certification decision are assessed by PECB. Training does not certify your organisation.

- **Format:** Multiple-choice, open book

- **Duration:** 3 hours; 30 extra minutes for non-native speakers

- **Questions:** 80, each with three options

- **Pass mark:** 70%

- **Language:** English

- **Delivery:** Online through the PECB Exams app, or on paper

Questions are stand-alone or scenario-based, with five questions per scenario. 30 questions (37.5%) test comprehension and 50 (62.5%) test application, analysis and evaluation. The weighting by domain and the credential tiers follow below.

### The credential you receive

Every tier takes the same exam and requires the PECB Code of Ethics. PECB awards the tier your experience supports. Pass without the experience and you receive PECB Certified AI Risk Provisional Manager, not Lead.

**Before you enrol: prerequisites**

PECB: “a fundamental understanding of AI concepts and a general knowledge of risk management principles. Familiarity with AI governance frameworks, such as the NIST AI Risk Management Framework or the EU AI Act, is beneficial but not mandatory.”

Exam weighting

## Five domains, 80 questions.

The weighting PECB publishes in the Lead AI Risk Manager candidate handbook (version 1.5).

| Domain | Questions | Share of the exam |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1. AI risk principles, concepts and regulations | 20 | 25% |
| 2. AI risk management program and governance | 15 | 18.75% |
| 3. AI risk identification and analysis | 15 | 18.75% |
| 4. AI risk evaluation, treatment and monitoring | 20 | 25% |
| 5. Organisational learning and performance improvement | 10 | 12.5% |

The credential you receive

## Four tiers, set by experience.

Every tier takes the PECB Certified Lead AI Risk Manager exam and requires the PECB Code of Ethics. Pass without the experience and PECB awards Provisional Manager, not Lead.

| Credential | Professional experience | AI risk management activity |
| --- | --- | --- |
| PECB Certified AI Risk Provisional Manager | None | None |
| PECB Certified AI Risk Manager | 2 years, at least 1 in AI risk management | 200 hours |
| PECB Certified Lead AI Risk Manager | 5 years, at least 2 in AI risk management | 300 hours |
| PECB Certified Senior Lead AI Risk Manager | 10 years, at least 7 in AI risk management | 1,000 hours |

Activities that count: determining AI risk management objectives and scope; performing AI risk assessment; developing an AI risk management programme; defining AI risk evaluation and risk acceptance criteria; evaluating risk treatment options for AI risks; monitoring and reviewing the AI risk management programme. Certifications other than Provisional are valid for three years and need CPD hours and the annual maintenance fee; the Provisional tier needs no maintenance.

Choosing between AI courses

## How it compares with other AI courses.

Each of these is a separate PECB course and exam. Choose by the work you do, not by the title.

| Course | What it is about | Choose it if |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Lead AI Risk Manager (this course) | The AI risk process from context and governance to treatment, monitoring and reporting, built on the NIST AI RMF, the EU AI Act and the MIT AI Risk Repository | You run or advise on an AI risk management programme |
| [ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer](https://aegentra.co.uk/academy/iso-42001-lead-implementer) | Establishing an AI management system to the certifiable ISO/IEC 42001 standard, integrated with the management systems you already run | Your organisation is building an AI management system or seeking ISO/IEC 42001 certification |
| [EU AI Governance Professional](https://aegentra.co.uk/academy/eu-ai-governance-professional) | EU AI Act roles, classification of AI uses, accountability, oversight and compliance evidence | Your main question is what the EU AI Act requires of you |
| [Certified AI Security Professional (CAISP)](https://aegentra.co.uk/academy/certified-ai-security-professional) | AI and LLM security risks, defensive controls, monitoring and incident response across the AI lifecycle | You secure AI systems |
| [Certified AI Manager (CAIM)](https://aegentra.co.uk/academy/certified-ai-manager) | Leading AI initiatives: governance, data readiness, Power BI dashboards and AI agents built in n8n | You lead AI projects and adoption |
| [Certified AI Professional (CAIP)](https://aegentra.co.uk/academy/certified-ai-professional) | The technical side of AI: machine learning, deep learning, NLP, computer vision and robotics, with AI security, ethics and governance | You build or evaluate AI systems technically |

Selling an AI agent to UK enterprise buyers who ask for AIUC-1? That is an organisational certification, not an individual credential: see [AIUC-1 readiness for AI agent vendors](https://aegentra.co.uk/services/govern/aiuc-1). For an AI management system in your organisation, see [ISO 42001 implementation](https://aegentra.co.uk/services/govern/iso-42001).

From knowledge to a working decision

## A customer-facing AI assistant goes live

Take a fictional UK retailer about to put a generative AI assistant in front of customers. Name three risks, for example a bias, a security vulnerability and a transparency issue, set evaluation and acceptance criteria and choose a treatment for each.

For each risk, record a decision, owner, evidence requirement and review trigger. Explain your assumptions and what remains outside the exercise.

Original optional study prompt, not an official PECB exam question, an additional included lab or evidence of professional experience. Use fictional information.

Make time for the learning

## Your course. Your study plan.

Turn the curriculum into a study plan: record your target dates, explain each topic in your own words and keep a list of questions to revisit. The downloadable sheet is pre-filled for this course and includes space for your notes. It is an optional Aegentra planning aid, not official PECB materials, an exam-question bank or evidence of professional experience. Use fictional examples, not confidential workplace information.

### Before you book the exam.

**Check your exact exam**

Confirm the course, exam language, duration and permitted materials against PECB’s current exam listing and rules. Similar titles from different training providers can lead to different qualifications. [PECB exam listing](https://help.pecb.com/list-of-pecb-exams/)

**Prepare your exam environment**

Before booking, check the latest online-exam manual for identification, equipment, connectivity and room requirements. Ask PECB about reasonable accommodations early if you need them. [PECB online-exam manual](https://pecb.com/en/online-exam-manual)

**Plan the credential application**

Passing the exam and being awarded a particular credential are separate steps. Check the applicable experience, references and application requirements; do not assume a Lead title is awarded automatically. [PECB certification requirements](https://pecb.com/en/certification-rules-and-policies)

For permitted materials, exam conduct and accommodation requests, read [PECB’s exam rules](https://pecb.com/en/exam-rules-and-policies). Requirements can change; check the current rules for your exact exam.

Your questions

## Before you choose.

**What is the best AI risk management certification?**

There is no single best one; it depends on the work you do. Lead AI Risk Manager is PECB’s credential for running an AI risk management programme. If you are building an AI management system, [ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer](https://aegentra.co.uk/academy/iso-42001-lead-implementer) fits better; for EU AI Act compliance, [EU AI Governance Professional](https://aegentra.co.uk/academy/eu-ai-governance-professional); for securing AI systems, [CAISP](https://aegentra.co.uk/academy/certified-ai-security-professional).

**What is the ISO standard for AI risk management?**

ISO/IEC 23894:2023 gives guidance on AI risk management. It is guidance, not a requirements standard an organisation is certified against. ISO/IEC 42001 is the certifiable AI management system standard, and it requires AI risk assessment and treatment.

**Is the Lead AI Risk Manager course based on ISO/IEC 23894?**

No. PECB builds it on the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, the EU AI Act and the MIT AI Risk Repository. ISO/IEC 23894 appears in the exam’s first domain alongside ISO/IEC 42001, ISO/IEC 22989 and the NIST AI RMF, so you need to know it, but it is not the basis of the course.

**What experience do I need to become a PECB Certified Lead AI Risk Manager?**

Five years of professional experience, at least two of them in AI risk management, and 300 hours of AI risk management activity, plus passing the exam and signing the PECB Code of Ethics.

**What happens if I pass the exam without five years of experience?**

PECB awards the tier your experience supports: AI Risk Provisional Manager with no experience, or AI Risk Manager with two years (one in AI risk management) and 200 hours of activity. The Lead title is not awarded on the exam alone.

**How hard is the Lead AI Risk Manager exam, and is it open book?**

It is open book: three hours, 80 multiple-choice questions with three options each, some stand-alone and some in five-question scenarios. 62.5% of the questions test application, analysis and evaluation rather than recall, and the pass mark is 70%. Non-native English speakers get 30 extra minutes.

**How is Lead AI Risk Manager different from ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer?**

[ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer](https://aegentra.co.uk/academy/iso-42001-lead-implementer) teaches you to establish an AI management system to a certifiable standard. Lead AI Risk Manager goes deep on one part of that work, the AI risk process, using the NIST AI RMF and the EU AI Act. The two fit together: ISO/IEC 42001 requires AI risk assessment and treatment.

**How do I keep the certification active?**

Certifications other than Provisional are valid for three years and need CPD hours and an annual maintenance fee. The bundle includes the first year’s fee. The Provisional tier needs no maintenance.
