How to become an ISO 31000 risk manager
Learn a structured approach, practise applying it to business decisions and build relevant experience. Choose the individual credential appropriate to your role; ISO 31000 is not an organisational certification standard.
Updated 18 October 2026 · Credential requirements should be checked with PECB before enrolment.
Start with the decisions you need to support
Risk work is more than filling a register. Identify the objective, decision owner, criteria and uncertainty. A strong record explains why an action was chosen and when it should be reviewed.
Choose Foundation, Risk Manager or Lead Risk Manager deliberately
Foundation introduces core concepts. Risk Manager develops application of the approach. Lead Risk Manager concerns broader leadership of risk-management work. Compare the course curriculum and prerequisites with your responsibilities.
Practise an evidence-based risk decision
Original exercise: a fictional software business depends on one support supplier. State the objective, consequences of disruption, uncertainty in your assessment and alternative treatments. Assign an owner and a review trigger; avoid pretending a score removes uncertainty.
Gain experience and verify the credential requirements
Keep an honest record of relevant responsibilities and work. Check PECB’s current application and experience requirements for the designation, rather than assuming completion awards every level.
Keep professional claims precise
An individual credential is not certification of an employer’s risk-management system. It does not guarantee employment or replace sector-specific competence. Describe the knowledge, experience and scope of work you can actually demonstrate.
