Internal audit / United Kingdom

Internal audit servicesIndependent, evidence-based, kept separate from implementation.

Aegentra conducts outsourced internal audits for UK organisations against ISO 27001, ISO 42001, ISO 27701, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001: one method, a named lead, fixed fees after scoping, and findings tied to the requirement and the evidence. We never certify.

What an internal audit practice is

The audit your standard requires,
done by someone who did not build the system.

Every management-system standard in the ISO harmonised structure carries the same Clause 9.2: audit your own system at planned intervals, on evidence, with objective and impartial auditors, and report the results to management. Small and mid-sized organisations rarely have a person who is both competent in the standard and independent of the system. Aegentra’s internal audit practice exists to be that person.

What you receive is your organisation’s internal audit, not an external assessment: it is scoped by your audit programme, tests your own requirements as well as the standard’s, reports to your management, and feeds your management review and corrective action. What you avoid is the finding a UKAS-accredited certification body raises most often under Clause 9.2: the system’s author auditing their own work.

The independence model

Three roles,
never one person.

Implementation, internal audit and certification are different purchases with different performers. Keeping them apart is what makes each one worth paying for.

RoleWho does itWhat it answersAegentra’s position
ImplementationYour team, with or without a consultant. How do we build a system that meets the requirement and fits the business?Offered as a separate service with its own scope. Never by the same people who then audit it.
Internal audit (Clause 9.2)An objective, impartial auditor: an independent employee or an outsourced provider.Does our system conform to our requirements and the standard, and is it effectively implemented and maintained? This practice. An auditor who had no part in designing or operating the system is assigned, and the impartiality assessment is documented.
CertificationA certification body accredited by UKAS in the UK.Should a certificate be issued, continued or withdrawn?None. Aegentra never certifies and says so on every page.

Where Aegentra has supported implementation for an organisation, any later internal audit is assigned to a different auditor under a documented competence and impartiality assessment, or declined if impartiality cannot be established.

Five standards

One method,
five sets of criteria.

Each page describes the standard-specific evidence, a worked example and the questions buyers ask. The method below is common to all five.

  • ISO/IEC 27001:2022

    ISO 27001 internal audit

A Clause 9.2 audit of the information security management system: all of Clauses 4 to 10 and a risk-based sample of applicable Annex A controls, tested on operating records such as leavers, changes, incidents, access reviews and supplier reviews. Most engagements run remotely across the UK with on-site observation where the sample needs it.

From £1,500 + VAT, fixed after scoping

    ISO 27001 internal audit service
  • ISO/IEC 42001:2023

    ISO 42001 internal audit

An audit of the AI management system: the AI system inventory and impact assessments, roles and accountability for AI decisions, data and model lifecycle controls, supplier and third-party model arrangements, and whether the governance the policy promises is the governance the teams operate.

Fixed fee after scoping, plus VAT

    ISO 42001 internal audit service
  • ISO/IEC 27701

    ISO 27701 internal audit

An audit of the privacy information management system as an extension of the ISMS: processing records, lawful basis and purpose, controller and processor responsibilities, data subject request handling, retention and the privacy-specific controls, sampled against real processing activities and supplier contracts.

Fixed fee after scoping, plus VAT

    ISO 27701 internal audit service
  • ISO 9001:2015

    ISO 9001 internal audit

A process-based audit of the quality management system that follows sampled orders, projects or service cases from customer requirement through planning, production or delivery, release, nonconforming output and corrective action, with suppliers and calibration tested along the way.

Fixed fee after scoping, plus VAT

    ISO 9001 internal audit service
  • ISO 45001:2018

    ISO 45001 internal audit

An audit of the occupational health and safety management system where the work is done: hazard identification against the task, the hierarchy of controls in use, worker and contractor consultation, legal compliance evaluation and incident investigation, with on-site observation planned around your shifts.

Fixed fee after scoping, plus VAT

    ISO 45001 internal audit service

The shared method

Agree. Examine. Report. Follow up.

Every audit, whatever the standard, produces the same four records, which is what lets a certification body and your management read them the same way.

  1. Agree the audit

Objectives, scope, criteria, methods, sample approach, auditor competence and impartiality, evidence handling and reporting, written into a plan before fieldwork.

  2. Examine the evidence

Document review, interviews with the people who run the processes, observation where the standard needs it, and a justified sample drawn from the full population of records.

  3. Report to management

Findings written as criterion, evidence, condition and conclusion, graded consistently, with limitations stated, matters examined and closed reported transparently, and an indexed working-paper trail.

  4. Follow up

Management owns correction and corrective action; the auditor verifies closure on evidence, and the results shape the next cycle of the audit programme.

Fee basis

Fixed after scoping.
Stated before work begins.

Internal audits are quoted in pounds sterling plus VAT as a fixed fee for an agreed scope. ISO 27001 internal audits start from £1,500 + VAT for a smaller organisation with one clear scope and accessible evidence. The other standards are quoted against the processes, activities, sites and sample depth involved.

What every proposal states

  • Objectives, scope, criteria and the standards covered
  • Named lead, assigned auditor and their qualification evidence
  • Sample commitments, on-site days and evidence handling
  • Deliverables, exclusions, fee, VAT treatment and payment terms
  • Follow-up verification, if included, and what triggers additional work

Before you commission the work

Your questions.
Clear answers.

What is an outsourced internal audit?

An internal audit required by a management-system standard (for example Clause 9.2 of ISO 27001, ISO 9001, ISO 45001, ISO 42001 or ISO 27701) performed on the organisation’s behalf by an independent provider. The audit remains the organisation’s own internal audit: it covers the organisation’s own requirements and the standard, reports to its management, and feeds its management review and corrective action. Outsourcing is the route the standards explicitly allow when internal impartiality cannot be achieved.

Why keep implementation, internal audit and certification separate?

Because each answers a different question and the second two depend on independence. Implementation builds the system. Internal audit evaluates it on evidence for management and must be objective and impartial about what it audits. Certification is an independent decision by an accredited body. An organisation that buys all three from one source, or lets its implementer audit their own work, loses the independence that makes the audit worth having, and a UKAS-accredited certification body will test that independence.

Who leads Aegentra’s internal audits?

An Engagement Quality Lead, a Principal Consultant who owns the scope, confirms the consultant’s independence and issues the report. The proposal names the lead and the consultant assigned to fieldwork, with their qualification evidence, before you confirm. Fieldwork is delivered by Aegentra’s consulting team; credentials held across the team include PECB ISO 27001 Lead Auditor, ISO 42001 Lead Auditor, CISA and CISM.

How does an internal audit engagement start?

With scoping. An organisation of around ten people or fewer usually completes a short questionnaire, unless it already has a scope and Statement of Applicability to share. A larger organisation signs an NDA first, then shares the scope, the Statement of Applicability and the number of sites to be visited. The ten-person line is a working understanding agreed with each client, not a rule.

What do we receive before the quote?

The proposed consultant’s profile with certificate numbers, qualifications and industry experience, a draft audit plan and the scope of work. The quote follows once you are satisfied with the consultant, and you can ask for a different consultant at any point before signing.

Can the consultant also work for our certification body?

Some of our consultants audit for certification bodies. We ask which body certifies you and state in writing whether the proposed consultant has worked with your organisation or with that body. If there is a conflict, a different consultant is proposed, so the internal audit cannot compromise your certification audit.

How are internal audits priced?

As a fixed fee agreed in writing after scoping, quoted in pounds sterling plus VAT. ISO 27001 internal audits start from £1,500 + VAT for a smaller organisation with one clear scope; the other standards are quoted against the processes, activities, sites and sample depth in scope. The proposal states inclusions, exclusions and the total payable before work begins, and any additional work needs your written agreement first.

Can one audit cover two standards?

An integrated programme can share planning, interviews and the common management-system clauses, and we schedule combined audits where it saves time. The criteria, the operational evidence and the conclusions stay distinct for each standard, and the report shows coverage of each separately, because a certification body audits each certificate on its own evidence.

Are internal audits delivered on site in the UK?

Remote by default for document review, interviews and record sampling, which keeps the fee down and the evidence trail clean. On-site observation is agreed in the proposal where the sample needs it: physical controls for ISO 27001, production or service delivery for ISO 9001, and work activities for ISO 45001, where it is usually the larger part of the audit. Aegentra is Australian-headquartered; UK engagements are delivered to UK organisations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in GBP plus VAT.
