ISO 27701 internal audit

Examine how your privacy information management system operates across processing activities, people and suppliers. A scoped PIMS audit connects agreed criteria to sampled evidence, clear findings and practical follow-up.

What shapes your quote

  • Processing activities, entities, systems and supplier interfaces
  • Controller and processor roles, risks and available evidence
  • Interview availability, onsite needs and separately scoped follow-up

The requirement in context

Separate PIMS assurance from a legal-compliance claim.

For a UK customer or supplier review, agree the processing activities, controller and processor responsibilities, and the evidence being requested. ISO/IEC 27701:2025 is a standalone PIMS standard. An internal audit evaluates the agreed management-system criteria; it is not a UK GDPR compliance certificate or a legal opinion.

A privacy audit trail

  1. The requirement

    What was agreed?

  2. The evidence

    What happened?

  3. The finding

    What needs to change?

A privacy commitment needs an evidence trail.

Inside the work

Can a closed privacy request be traced to completion?

Fictional SaaS example: the organisation's approved deletion procedure requires confirmation from an in-scope processor before closing a request. No legal deadline or universal deletion rule is assumed.

Audit stepSampled evidenceSupported conclusion
Criteria and sampleThree closed requests selected against the approved procedure, with the selection rationale recorded. The criterion comes from the agreed procedure; the sample does not cover every request.
ExaminationOne request has an application deletion log but no required processor confirmation. Interviews and other records are checked. The sample does not demonstrate the required confirmation. Do not infer that all data remains stored.
Finding and follow-upManagement addresses the request and investigates why closure was possible without confirmation.Assign an owner, corrective action and evidence for an agreed effectiveness review.
LimitsBackups, legal holds, retention schedules and supplier interfaces are considered within the scope.Deletion is not automatically immediate erasure from every backup; report the actual criteria and limitations.

What you take away

Evidence.
Ownership.
A practical next step.

Examine how your privacy information management system operates across processing activities, people and suppliers. A scoped PIMS audit connects agreed criteria to sampled evidence, clear findings and practical follow-up.

Two colleagues discussing work with laptops beside an office window.
From the agreed criteria to a traceable finding.
  • An agreed audit plan, criteria and secure evidence request
  • Evidence-linked findings with clear sample and scope limitations
  • A report of conclusions and management actions for consideration
  • A separately agreed corrective-action effectiveness review where commissioned

How the work moves forward

Agree. Examine. Follow up.

Responsibilities and access are agreed before the engagement. Work stays connected to the outcome—not the number of documents produced.

  1. Agree the audit

Confirm the PIMS boundary, edition, processing roles, competence, impartiality and secure evidence access.

  2. Trace the evidence

Follow selected processing activities through records, interviews and supplier interfaces.

  3. Report and follow up

Link findings to criteria and evidence, explain limits and agree management actions and any effectiveness review.

Further training and audit qualifications

Further training and audit qualifications across the team include ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer training, ASD ISM General and Technical audit codes, ISO/IEC 27017 and ISO/IEC 27018 audit codes, and ISO 9001 and ISO 19011 audit qualifications.

Relevant competence. Clear responsibilities.

For internal audit, competence, objectivity, impartiality and prior involvement are checked before the work is accepted. Implementation, internal audit and independent certification have separate roles.

These are individual qualifications held across the wider team, not a claim that every consultant holds every credential or that Aegentra is an accredited certification body.

A practical starting point

Does the privacy request record explain what actually happened?

Trace the request through the systems and suppliers within scope. Check whether the recorded outcome is supported by the evidence required by the organisation's procedure. A closed ticket alone does not establish completion, and a missing record does not justify an unsupported claim about every processing activity.

Fictional working example

In this fictional example, a processor-confirmation step is absent from one sampled request. Management investigates the cause, addresses the request and supplies evidence for an agreed follow-up. This is not a client result.

Before you commission the work

Your questions.
Clear answers.

What is an ISO 27701 internal audit?

It is an evidence-based assessment of your privacy information management system against agreed criteria. The engagement defines the standard edition, processing activities, organisational roles and sample before fieldwork. You receive findings and limitations, not an organisational certificate or a blanket opinion that every privacy law has been met.

Do we need ISO 27001 certification before a PIMS internal audit?

ISO/IEC 27701:2025 is a standalone management-system standard, so ISO 27001 certification is not a prerequisite for auditing a PIMS against that edition. An integrated audit can examine shared processes where appropriate, but the plan and findings must identify which privacy and information-security criteria were actually evaluated.

Which edition will the ISO 27701 audit cover?

We agree the edition explicitly before accepting the engagement. ISO/IEC 27701:2025 is the current edition; the earlier 2019 edition was an extension to information-security standards. If your programme or certificate still references 2019, clarify the relevant certification-body arrangements and any transition scope rather than silently mixing requirements.

Can you audit privacy controls you helped implement?

The person who designed or implemented the work must not independently audit that same work. Where Aegentra provides both services, we assess prior involvement, conflicts, reporting arrangements and competence, then assign an appropriately impartial auditor. A different name alone is insufficient; if the conflict cannot be managed, use a separate provider.

What evidence is needed for an ISO 27701 privacy audit?

Start with the PIMS scope, processing activities, controller and processor responsibilities, privacy risks, applicable requirements and control decisions. The agreed sample can then trace notices, requests, retention, supplier instructions and operational records. We agree minimised evidence access first; do not send raw personal records or passwords through the enquiry form.

How long does a PIMS audit take, and can it be remote?

The schedule and delivery method follow the agreed scope, evidence access and interview availability, not a promised universal number of days. Remote review can use controlled document access or supervised screen-sharing. Any onsite work, sample limitations, reporting deadline and follow-up effort are confirmed in the proposal before fieldwork begins.

Is this a privacy certification audit or a Lead Auditor course?

Neither. This is an organisational internal-audit service with an agreed scope and report. A certification body separately decides whether to issue an ISO certificate. A PECB Lead Auditor course develops an individual's knowledge and has its own exam and credential conditions. Training, implementation and certification fees are not included automatically.

What is the UK price for ISO 27701 internal audit?

UK service fees are quoted for the agreed scope. The proposal will define the audit boundary, evidence access, outputs, tax treatment and total payable. Legal advice, implementation, certification-body fees and additional follow-up are not automatically included.

Will a privacy audit automatically prove UK GDPR compliance?

No. A PIMS internal audit evaluates the agreed standard and organisational criteria. Legal compliance requires assessment of the actual processing and obligations. Certification, audit findings and a DPIA are not interchangeable.

What should a controller or processor include in the audit brief?

Identify the relevant processing activities, organisational roles, suppliers, system boundaries and applicable standard edition. Agree how privacy obligations, records and contractual requirements enter the audit criteria; do not send personal-data exports through the enquiry form.

What should we prepare for a scoping conversation?

Describe the organisation, product or service, customer requirement, systems and preferred timing. Do not send passwords or confidential records through the enquiry form. We agree secure evidence handling separately.
