How to become an ISO 42001 Lead Auditor
Combine AIMS understanding with evidence-led audit capability and relevant experience. An AIMS audit, a model evaluation and a legal assessment answer different questions.
Updated 18 October 2026 · Credential requirements should be checked with PECB before enrolment.
Understand what the audit is examining
An internal AIMS audit concerns management-system criteria and evidence. It does not automatically test every model output or decide legal compliance. Be able to explain the engagement’s scope and limits.
Develop planning and evidence skills
Learn to define objectives, criteria, sampling and reporting. Evaluate competence, confidentiality and impartiality before taking an assignment; an auditor should not assume that having implemented the controls makes them impartial to audit those controls.
Practise tracing an AI change
Original exercise: an internal drafting assistant is proposed for customer-facing advice. Trace the changed purpose through assessment, approval, oversight and monitoring. State what evidence is missing before reaching a conclusion.
Build relevant audit experience
Record the actual scope, responsibilities and experience you are allowed to disclose. A course exercise does not become professional audit experience simply because the report looks realistic.
Check PECB and appointment requirements separately
Verify the current PECB examination and experience requirements for the designation sought. A certification body or employer may require additional competence and appointment checks; the course alone does not confer that appointment.
