    Why take it

    What the course
    does for you.

    • You can explain each change between ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 9001:2026 to colleagues, a client or a certification body auditor, and name the clause it sits in.
    • You can read the new concepts in the 2026 text, such as quality culture and ethical behaviour and the separate treatment of opportunities, the way the standard intends.
    • You can plan the changes an existing quality management system needs to conform to ISO 9001:2026, and decide what to show at your next surveillance or recertification audit.
    • You come away with a separate PECB credential showing you have studied the 2026 edition and passed an exam on it.
    • It takes two days of study, not a five-day Lead course. PECB, UKAS and Global ACI all describe the revision as targeted rather than fundamental.

    The new edition

    ISO 9001:2026
    is published.

ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026, the date both Global ACI and UKAS use. It replaces ISO 9001:2015 including Amendment 1:2024. Pages that still describe a draft or an “expected” September 2026 release are out of date.

UKAS calls the revision “targeted updates rather than fundamental change”. Global ACI expects organisations to find the changes “largely intuitive” and “attainable with reasonable effort”.

The standard now follows the Harmonized Structure that ISO uses for all management system standards (ISO TMB resolution 16/2025). ISO 9000 remains the normative reference, Annex A is rewritten to clarify the requirements and Annex B, the list of other standards, is removed.

The rating column is UKAS’s own, from its high-level gap analysis (version 1.0, September 2026). Clause wording follows Global ACI’s transition requirements. The 2015 column includes Amendment 1:2024.

    Where the work is

    The five areas
    that changed most.

UKAS names five: “interested parties, quality culture and ethical behaviour, risks and opportunities, planning of changes and management review.”

    Interested parties (4.2)

UKAS rates the revision to 4.2 significant, and management review must now consider changes in the needs and expectations of relevant interested parties (9.3.2 c). Be ready to show how you notice those changes and who reviews them.

Quality culture and ethical behaviour (5.1.1 and 7.3)

Top management must promote quality culture and ethical behaviour, and people must be aware of them. The new note says they “are reflected in its shared values, attitudes, and established practices”.

    Risks and opportunities (6.1)

Opportunities get their own clause, 6.1.3, separate from actions to address risks in 6.1.2. A single combined register may need a second look.

    Planning of changes (6.3)

A change to the QMS must now be planned with how its effectiveness will be monitored and evaluated, how it will be communicated and how its results will be reviewed.

    Management review (9.3.2)

Inputs move from “taking into consideration” to “shall include”, and changes in interested parties’ needs and expectations become an input.

    What did not change

Climate change arrived with Amendment 1:2024. If you implemented the amendment, Clause 4.1 asks nothing new. Continual improvement moves from 10.3 to 10.1, which UKAS rates as no change in substance.

    Transition timetable

    ISO 9001:2026
    transition deadlines.

Certified organisations have three years. The dates come from Global ACI’s mandatory transition requirements (TECH-3-TR, issued 4 September 2026), which bind the accreditation bodies that sign its arrangement and the certification bodies they accredit, and from UKAS’s technical bulletin for UK certification bodies.

UKAS counts 18 months from the publication date; Global ACI counts from the last day of the publication month, which is why the two March 2028 dates differ. Check which date your certification body is working to. Organisations move to the 2026 edition at a surveillance audit, at recertification or at a special transition audit; remote audits are allowed under IAF MD 4, and the certification body decides whether extra audit time is needed. After 30 September 2029, Global ACI says ISO 9001:2015 accreditations are no longer valid. To check that a certificate is UKAS-accredited, see how to check an ISO certificate claim.

Domain 1 tests the differences between the main clauses of ISO 9001:2026 and ISO 9001:2015. Domain 2 tests understanding, planning and implementing the ISO 9001:2026 changes. Online multiple-choice results are shown straight away; after an unsuccessful attempt PECB requires at least 15 days before the first retake. Ask the Academy to confirm the pass mark with PECB before you sit the exam.

    The credential

Passing leads to the PECB Certified ISO 9001:2026 Transition credential. PECB requires no professional experience and no QMS project experience for it; you sign the PECB Code of Ethics. References, work experience and downgrades do not apply to Transition certificates, and the credential needs no maintenance.

It is a separate credential. PECB lists “quality professionals wishing to update their ISO 9001 certificates” among the audience, but it does not say whether the Transition credential updates or re-dates an existing PECB ISO 9001 Lead Implementer or Lead Auditor credential. Do not assume it does; if that matters to you, ask the Academy to confirm with PECB before you buy.

    Before you enrol: prerequisites
    • None. PECB: “There are no prerequisites to participating in this training course.”
    • Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 makes the clause-by-clause comparison easier to follow.

    Your questions

    Before you choose.

Has ISO 9001:2026 been published yet?

Yes. ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026. It replaces ISO 9001:2015 including Amendment 1:2024.

What are the main changes in ISO 9001:2026?

UKAS names five areas: interested parties, quality culture and ethical behaviour, risks and opportunities, planning of changes and management review. Opportunities get their own clause (6.1.3), changes to the QMS must be planned with monitoring, communication and a review of results (6.3), and management review must include changes in interested parties’ needs and expectations (9.3.2). UKAS and Global ACI describe the revision as targeted rather than fundamental.

When do certified organisations have to transition to ISO 9001:2026?

By 30 September 2029, under Global ACI’s mandatory transition requirements. Organisations move at a surveillance audit, at recertification or at a special transition audit, and the certification body decides whether extra audit time is needed.

Can we still certify to ISO 9001:2015?

For now. UKAS says UK certification bodies stop accepting new ISO 9001:2015 applications on 16 March 2028, and Global ACI says no new ISO 9001:2015 certifications can be issued after 31 March 2028. Existing 2015 certificates must move to the 2026 edition by 30 September 2029.

Do I need an ISO 9001 Lead Auditor or Lead Implementer certificate to take this course?

No. PECB states there are no prerequisites, and the credential needs no professional or QMS project experience. Knowing ISO 9001:2015 helps, because the course compares the two editions.

Does the Transition credential replace or update my ISO 9001 Lead Auditor certificate?

PECB does not say. It awards a separate credential, PECB Certified ISO 9001:2026 Transition, and has published no statement on what happens to existing ISO 9001 Lead Implementer or Lead Auditor credentials. If your plans depend on it, ask the Academy to confirm with PECB. PECB has said its ISO 14001 credentials are unaffected by the 2026 edition of that standard (see ISO 14001:2026 Transition), but that statement covers ISO 14001 only.

What is the ISO 9001:2026 Transition exam format?

One hour, 40 multiple-choice questions, closed book, online or on paper, in English or French. PECB has not published the pass mark for this exam. The bundle includes one free retake, taken at least 15 days after an unsuccessful attempt and within 12 months of purchase.

Is there an annual maintenance fee for the Transition credential?

No. PECB lists Transition credentials among those that need no maintenance, so there is no annual maintenance fee and no CPD requirement.
