How to become an ISO 27001 Lead Auditor
Develop ISMS knowledge and audit skills, build relevant experience, and apply for the credential whose requirements you meet. Training is not appointment as a certification-body auditor.

Learn to distinguish a criterion from an opinion
A useful audit finding links the requirement, sampled evidence and observed condition. “I would do it differently” is not, on its own, evidence of nonconformity. Develop an understanding of the management system before evaluating it.
Choose an audit-focused course
Lead Auditor study addresses planning and conducting audits. Lead Implementer study has a different focus. Check the course curriculum, exam, format and prerequisites before purchasing.
Practise a small evidence trail
Original exercise: compare a fictional access-removal procedure with a sample of leaver records. Write the criterion, sample, finding and limitation separately. Then identify what you would ask management to investigate.
Gain experience without overstating your authority
Record actual audit responsibilities and relevant experience with appropriate permission. Observe competence and impartiality requirements. Do not describe a classroom exercise as a client audit or assume that a credential authorises every type of certification audit.
Check the current PECB designation requirements
Passing the examination and meeting a particular credential’s experience requirements are separate. Use PECB’s current table for the appropriate designation and application. Employers and certification bodies set their own appointment requirements.
